I'll try to compress to ten. Props to Bibliophilia...

1. The Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE)
2. Native Son - Richard Wright
3. Mis-Education of the Negro - Carter G. Woodson
4. The Envy of the World: On Being a Black Man in America - Ellis Cose
5. Race Matters - Cornel West
6. Father Found - R.M. Johnson
7. The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison
8. Hush - Jacqueline Woodson
9. Raising Fences: A Black Man's Love Story - Michael Datcher
10. Disappearing Acts - Terry McMillan
11. Tar Baby (yes, I had to take it back, it was the first Black book I ever read haha) - Faith Ringgold

I've only read the highligted one's, but I'll check out some of the others. I've been meaning to read "Race Matters" for some time.

I've read a couple of Terry McMillan books and she always seems to male bash to me, so I wasn't interested in reading Disappearing Acts. The only book by her that I really liked was "A Day Late And A Dollar Short."

Also I read a "Tar Baby" that was written by Toni Morrison, and it did not blow my skirt up, but in the book Toni Morrison used words most magnificently. I loved her descriptive detail, just didn't feel the story itself.

True, McMillan does male bash lol. What'd you think of Day Late? I've been meaning to read that, but always end up passing it over for some reason...

2, 3, 7 & 11 are classics in my opinion. 10 is really a personal favorite.
Good list Flame.

Some great choices by everyone. I see I have a lot of your picks that I need to read. So many books, so little time. :?

My list is coming...
This statement reminds me of an episode of THE OUTER LIMITS, it starred a young Burgess Meredith as a wimpy bookworm who was totally under his wife's control. She was killed when the BIG BOMB was dropped. He found a safe place in the ruins and wandered around seeking other survivors. Finding none, he stopped in front of the library. After choosing several good books, he said "Finally, I can read all I want in peace!" As he leaned over to place his stack of selected books on the ground, his glasses fell from his pocket and he stepped on them. After the enormity of what had just happened hit him, he just sat there and cried!

WATCH OUT MEMPHO! "So many books, so little time."
